Discover the beauty of the South Downs National Park

  • Published: 4 January 2019

2019 is finally upon us and with it comes an opportunity to take a look at the year ahead and decide upon those New Year resolutions. For many, these resolutions are a target to become more fit and healthy. If this sounds like you, what better place to achieve these goals than in the stunning setting of the South Downs National Park.

This highly acclaimed part of England stretches for many miles just above the South Coast and sees the medieval town of Arundel as one of its many highlights. Completely unspoilt, the area is quintessentially English with quaint and picturesque villages nestled throughout. Whether you are a keen walker, cyclist or someone who just wants to soak up the fresh country air and get away from it all, this outstanding beauty spot has something for everyone.

Located at Crossbush Arundel, Comfort Inn is perfectly situated to help you explore this stunning part of the world. Arundel Park is one of the highlights and is an ideal setting for a relaxing stroll. With parking readily available throughout the town, the park is just a few minutes walk away from wherever you park, this area allows you many opportunities to explore.

Nestled behind the Castle is Swanbourne lake. A popular spot for tourists and locals alike, Swanbourne lake features boat hire and a cafe to help you enjoy the water or to just simply relax in beautiful surroundings. From the lake, you are able to walk up into the park. This is a walk that does feature some steeper terrain, however upon reaching the summit you are greeted with your reward. Stunning views across the West Sussex countryside as you look down on the quiet town of Amberley and the River Arun.

If an off-road climb is not to your liking, try parking at the top of Arundel by the Cathedral and walking up through the north gates. This is a route that takes you to the same viewpoint as described above but has the benefit of being a more gentle climb whilst following a tarmacked road. Both routes are rewarding and offer some of the best views that Arundel has to offer.

For those that are after a flatter route, just a few miles drive away is Whiteway’s Lodge. This location has it’s own free car park and allows you to explore some of the surrounding woodlands. With terrain that is mostly hard underfoot, this area can be explored throughout the year and really is a fantastic place to unwind amongst the trees.

A final area of note is Angmering Park. A mere couple of minutes drive down the A27 from us, Angmering Park is home to the highly popular Blue Bell woods which put on a spectacular show every Springtime. However, whatever the season, Angmering Park is another great area of beauty to explore.

With all of these walks, you are never be more than a few miles drive away from us...
